Generac's Next-Gen Transfer Switch: What Installers Need to Know
Generac has redesigned its residential automatic transfer switch line. The Next-Gen series replaces the legacy RTS/RXSW platform on new installs and brings three changes that matter directly to your quoting, install time, and callback rate: a hardened control board built for real-world grid problems, factory-installed whole-home surge protection (optional), and a new mounting system designed to cut install labor.
What's Actually New
Three engineering changes drive the value proposition customers will ask you about:
Hardened transfer control: The control logic is built to tell the difference between a real utility outage and a temporary brownout or voltage sag. That means fewer nuisance starts and fewer false transfers on jobs where the local grid is flaky — a common callback driver on older RXSW units.
Factory-installed whole-home surge protection: This is optional, but you can now order residential switches with built-in SPDs. You no longer need to sell and field-install a separate surge protector to give the customer that coverage, and it removes one more part number and one more labor step from the job.
Fast-mount hanging system: The enclosure uses a new French-cleat style mount designed to cut the two-person, hold-and-drill install down to a one-person job. Worth factoring into your labor estimates once your crews have a few installs under their belt.
Compatibility
Next-Gen switches are built for use with Generac generators running Evolution or Power Zone controllers. If a customer is pairing a Next Gen switch with an older unit on a Nexus controller, double check compatibility before you quote.
What This Means for Your Quotes
If your customer needs surge protection, just quote a next-gen switch with built-in SPD rather than a separate SPD line item.
Mention the brown-out protection and reduced nuisance starts to customers in areas with known grid instability.
Confirm generator controller type (Evolution / Power Zone vs. Nexus) when replacing ATS on older generator systems.
